Shanghai Natural History Museum

For the Shanghai Natural History Museum, Relicase's major challenge is the irregular museum showcases, such as irregular polygonal and circular arc display cases. They require extremely high machining accuracy on sheet metals, glass, aluminum profile frames among others. Furthermore, the design of the opening structure must be clever and well-thought through to secure the motion path of irregular glass.

The Shanghai Natural History Museum, a branch of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, was our first project with a massive natural history museum. Compared to relics and heritage museums, natural history museums require display cases which are extremely huge or of different shapes with an extra-high load carrying capacity. This is because the dimensions of exhibits may differ from very small, in the case of butterfly specimens to ultra-big like megafauna specimens or skeletal fossils; or the weights of exhibits may differ from light as with feather or fur specimens to heavy as with large-scale geological specimens. Due to the presence of a great number of colour-rich specimen exhibits, restoring their original colours is necessary when introducing an illumination system. Besides, beautiful colours are needed to create an amazing display atmosphere and the colours and materials of case surfaces must be selected carefully before a final decision is made. For cases with a high probability of interaction with viewers, nterrelated structures must be calculated accurately on these display cases for purpose of installation of multimedia devices.

Exhibition booth design for museum showcases

Each exhibition is short-lived, and the booths set up at the booth are temporary. The end of the exhibition means that the well-designed booths also need to be dismantled. In order to reduce the cost of exhibitions and reduce the waste of resources, it is necessary to master the booth design and construction strategy of the museum showcases.

First, the structural design should be rigorous

The advantages and disadvantages of the exhibition decoration design scheme are generally judged as ”complete function, outstanding image and unique shape”, but ”the structure is ingenious and the booth can be used repeatedly and updated” is also an important aspect of the exhibition design.

Second, choose decoration materials need to save

Booth construction does not require durability like public and home renovations, nor does it take into account construction quality problems caused by time and season changes. The goal of the exhibition is to highlight the effect while ensuring safety.

Third, consider in advance to avoid deviations during construction

If there is a lack of exhibition experience, it is likely to be revised during the exhibition period, resulting in an increase in site rent and overtime pay for workers. If exhibitors have more time to communicate with the construction company in design and construction, they will not only save resources but also establish From the exhibitors and construction companies, "high quality, high efficiency" image.

Six materials used in museum showcases

What is the significance of museum showcases for cultural relics, as well as a large selection of materials for production. Generally speaking, six materials are often used in the process of showcase production.

1. Titanium-magnesium alloy: It is convenient to manufacture, moderate in price, convenient for disassembly and transportation, light and flexible; the disadvantage is that the structure is old-fashioned and the style is single.

2, Iron material: material price is low, light weight; the disadvantage is that the metal showcase structure changes little, it is difficult to make a variety of effects, and if the overall use of iron material, the showcase products lack the design taste.

3, Glass: the material price is low, and there is a transparent effect; the disadvantage is that the material is heavy and brittle.

4. Acrylic: It has the effect of transparent and clear; the disadvantage is that the material is heavy, brittle and expensive.

5, Board: the color of the style can be changed, the material of the board is relatively selective, such as fire board, aluminum-plastic board, organic board, acrylic, wallpaper, etc.; the disadvantage is that the board showcase often appears after a long time of use. Open the glue phenomenon.

6. Wood: The structure can be adjusted greatly, can make various design effects, and the material price is also moderate; the disadvantage is that the wooden material is heavier, and the showcase is not light and inconvenient to move.

The characteristics of museum showcases

The museum showcase is different from the ordinary showcase. Its value is high. It is not a general showcase. It has many requirements for air and light, temperature and safety. It is also about the characteristics of museum showcases.

There are 7 characteristics: coordination, durability, environmental protection, safety, operability, lighting control performance, environmental control performance, and its performance is explained as follows.

1. The appearance of the showcase and the use of materials, as well as the lighting configuration of the showcase, must be considered during the design process. Starting from the style and characteristics of the exhibits, the showcase will be integrated into the exhibition environment to highlight the exhibits.

2. In addition to making the exhibits better displayed, the museum showcases also need to consider the structure of the showcase for long-term use in the indoor environment without significant changes.

3. The environmental protection of the showcase should be as inert as possible to ensure that the exhibits are not damaged by chemical reactions in the showcase.

4. The steel frame structure is used to ensure the reliability of the overall structure. The glass is made of laminated glass that meets the anti-theft standard. The locks are made of high security locks designated by the world's major museums. At the same time, use the security alarm system.

5. Each showcase can be operated by one person independently. The daily access passage of the showcase is separated from the entrance and exit of the display area.

6. No matter what kind of lighting method is used, it must meet the requirements. Create an atmosphere, highlight the exhibits, and take care of the lighting of the auxiliary items. Conceal the light spot, adjust the illumination and angle, filter the infrared light, ultraviolet light and heat to prevent damage to the exhibits.

7. Active control and passive control of humidity can be realized according to requirements. For a certain size of the showcase, constant temperature and humidity control, anaerobic small environment, air filtration and Ethernet-based environmental data monitoring can be realized.

Museum showcases production precautions

Defining the precautions in the process of making museum showcases can help us to better produce and ensure the quality of our products.

1. We must be clear about the purpose of the showcase design.

The function of the showcase is to better display the product, rather than ignoring the essence of the display and pursuing something that is not realistic.

2, The showcase should be designed with simplicity as the principle

On the one hand, we can save a lot of materials with simple design, and also save a lot of processing links; on the other hand, simplicity is also a popular trend of the times. In a limited time and space, it is critical that viewers and audiences get information on exhibits quickly and efficiently, and that strong interest is generated. Simple design can do this well.

3. Design and production of showcases from the perspective of the audience

From the perspective of others, thinking about the problem, the design and production of the showcase is the same. If the showcase design is too conservative, no one will appreciate it. Especially in the highly competitive exhibitions, the victory or not depends on the audience’s preferences and reactions. If we can carry out creative design and processing based on the results of market research, the effect of the show is definitely optimistic.

How to keep the museum showcases from fading?

1. To keep the museum showcases from fading, it is critical to choose high-quality paint. Of course, it is important to make the surface coating of the showcases not to change color for a long time. The quality of the paint is important. Secondly, the technology is also important when adding paint to the surface of the showcases. In short, the technology + quality is high. The paint is a magic weapon that keeps the paint on the surface of the showcases for a long time.

2. Relevant to the environment in which the showcases is located: Generally, the showcases are placed in public places such as shopping malls, specialty stores, shopping malls, and large department stores. The malls will install and open air-conditioning in every corner, if the showcases is placed. If it is just a cold air port, it will let the air-cooled water spray directly spray onto the surface of the showcases. This will take a long time, and the paint will not easily fall off if it does not fall off. Therefore, pay attention to the environment in which the showcases is located. The location of the good environmental space is also an important factor in maintaining the long-term discoloration of the surface coating of the showcases.

Johnson & Johnson Pavilion - Beijing 2008 Olympics

Five pieces of The Terracotta Warriors from Emperor Qin Shihuang (Qin Dynasty: 221 to 206 BC) were exhibited during the Beijing Olympic Games 2008 at the Johnson & Johnson Olympic Exhibition Center in Olympic Park. These actual size genuine artifacts include a standing as well as a kneeling warrior figurine, two officers and a fully restored figurine which was originally in fragmented pieces.

Relicase designed and utilized all-glass frameless museum showcases, to match the overall style of the pavilion. Due to the large size of the display showcases and in consideration of the need for repeated use of these showcases, the showcases were made as detachable units. These showcases were also designed to bear the combined weight of the heavy artifacts as well as the workers and curators putting up this exhibition. After the Beijing Olympic Games, the showcases were donated to the Museum of The Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Emperor Qin Shihuang. We also provided the services of detaching the showcases in Beijing and transporting them to Xi'an.
