Johnson & Johnson Pavilion - Beijing 2008 Olympics

Five pieces of The Terracotta Warriors from Emperor Qin Shihuang (Qin Dynasty: 221 to 206 BC) were exhibited during the Beijing Olympic Games 2008 at the Johnson & Johnson Olympic Exhibition Center in Olympic Park. These actual size genuine artifacts include a standing as well as a kneeling warrior figurine, two officers and a fully restored figurine which was originally in fragmented pieces.

Relicase designed and utilized all-glass frameless museum showcases, to match the overall style of the pavilion. Due to the large size of the display showcases and in consideration of the need for repeated use of these showcases, the showcases were made as detachable units. These showcases were also designed to bear the combined weight of the heavy artifacts as well as the workers and curators putting up this exhibition. After the Beijing Olympic Games, the showcases were donated to the Museum of The Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Emperor Qin Shihuang. We also provided the services of detaching the showcases in Beijing and transporting them to Xi'an.

The technical requirements of the museum display cases

Museum display cases technical requirements mainly include materials, size, sealing, temperature and humidity, fire prevention, lighting, opening, anti-theft, anti-hazardous materials, dust prevention and so on. For different cultural relics, the designers must put forward the technical requirements of the relevant museum display cases.

The following introduces several major technical requirements:

1. Temperature and humidity

The display cases has certain temperature and humidity which are necessary and basic protection measures for cultural relics. While displaying the cultural relics, the museum must always keep in mind the important duties of protecting the cultural relics. Cultural relics are non-renewable and cultural carriers. They must be protected at all costs.

2. Open

The design of the opening method for showcases widd depend on the type of showcase, its size and position, the operating preferences of the museum staff and other factors. Regardless of the opening method, we take close safety precasutions and ensure independent operation by one people.

3. Closed

The closed museum exhibits good performance can effectively control the display cabinet temperature and humidity, dust, prevent the intrusion of harmful substances, to ensure the purity of air, etc., for the protection of cultural relics inside the cabinet has a very important role. In fact, to measure the quality of the showcase, the sealing performance is one of the more important indicators. For cultural relics such as paintings and silk paintings, in order to achieve a constant temperature and humidity in the cabinet, the display cabinet must have a good seal.

4. Fire prevention

Fire prevention is a necessary basic requirement for the exhibition and exhibition facilities including exhibition halls and museum display cases. With the advancement of science and technology, modern museums will be more and more advanced in the use of fire prevention facilities, which is more conducive to the protection of cultural relics.

5. Lighting

The quality of the display of artifacts depends largely on the lighting of the showcase. From creating an exhibition environment and atmosphere, and highlighting cultural relics, artificial light sources can maximize the light source and illumination. Any type of lighting must meet the requirements of the Codes for Design of Lighting in Museums.

How to maintain the museum display cases?

Themuseum display casesare used to display goods with a protective display stand, but it also needs to be maintained. How to maintain the museum display cases?
First, when wiping the showcases, it is best to wipe the display cases with a soft cloth that is absorbent, such as a towel, cotton, or flannel cloth, otherwise it may scratch the surface of showcases, which should be avoided as much as possible.
Second, Don't clean the dust on the surface of the showcases with a dry cloth. The dust consists of fibers, sand, and alumina. Many people clean the surface of the showcases with a dry cloth, but in fact, these fine particles can damage the surface paint of the display cases in the friction rubbing back and forth. Although these scratches are negligibly small and even the naked eye can't see it, but over time, it will cause the surface of the showcase looking pale and rough, and no longer shining.
Finally, Pay attention to prevent water from penetrating into the wood. If happened, it will cause moldy or local deformation of the wood and shorten the service life.

MUSEUM DISPLAY CASES PRODUCTION PROCESS REQUIREMENTS

Themuseum display casesneed to meet the production process requirements of four items: protection of cultural relics technical requirements, safety and technical requirements of cultural relics, aesthetic visual requirements, the actual operation of the use of technical requirements.
Museum display cases are the space facilities in which museums display cultural artifacts with the most realistic attitude and artistic appeal. The museum is a place for arts and cultural activities that integrate advanced technology and dense information. The art collection of cultural relics is a representative of the museum. With the rapid development of science and technology in modern society, the requirements for the production of the museum showcases are getting higher and higher. Showcases in today's museums are also highly valued artworks. It is also the last line of defense for the protection of cultural relics collections.
The types of showcases used in the display and storage of different cultural relics are also very different. At the same time, we also need to comprehensively consider the requirements of display design, the type of cultural relics, the characteristics of the architectural structure, the location of the relics, the long-term planning of the exhibition hall, and many other factors. Heritage showcase type. This is the basis of our initial work.

Shenzhen Stock Exchange Archives Centre

Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE) Archives Centre, which mainly houses calligraphy and painting exhibits, was designed for exchange exhibitions, so themuseum display casesdeployed in it are specifically constructed for the display and protection of paper exhibits.
We use SCHOTT AMIRAN anti-reflection glass from Germany to reduce the visual impact caused by glaring lights and simultaneously to restore the true colors of paintings. ERCO LED track wall-washers are also used for a better performance. A lighting control module is integrated into the DALI control system of the whole showroom to allow for convenience and improved efficiency.
The MiniClima humidity-constant system allows for the unified control of all display cases in the showroom. This system was installed in an equipment room a distance from the showroom to minimize distractions caused by work noise and to facilitate the daily management & maintenance of equipment.
A newly updated TCFA electronic access system and electronic lifting system have been applied in all cases.
Many difficulties were overcome during installation. For instance, the following problems were successfully addressed: the hoisting of 3800*1750mm glass from outside the building's curtain wall to the 8th floor, where the showroom does not have any passageway; the bearing capacity of the raised flooring in the showroom failed to secure the installation of display cases; the humidity-constant system's pipeline from the equipment room to the showroom was blocked by many building structures, etc.

Shanghai Natural History Museum

The Shanghai Natural History Museum, a branch of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, was our first project with a massive natural history museum. Compared to relics and heritage museums, natural history museums require display cases which are extremely huge or of different shapes with an extra-high load carrying capacity. This is because the dimensions of exhibits may differ from very small, in the case of butterfly specimens to ultra-big like megafauna specimens or skeletal fossils; or the weights of exhibits may differ from light as with feather or fur specimens to heavy as with large-scale geological specimens. Due to the presence of a great number of colour-rich specimen exhibits, restoring their original colours is necessary when introducing an illumination system. Besides, beautiful colours are needed to create an amazing display atmosphere and the colours and materials of case surfaces must be selected carefully before a final decision is made. For cases with a high probability of interaction with viewers, nterrelated structures must be calculated accurately on these display cases for purpose of installation of multimedia devices.

The major challenge of this project is the large quantity of irregular cases, such as irregular polygonalFree standing display casesand circular arc display cases. They require extremely high machining accuracy on sheet metals, glass, aluminum profile frames among others. Furthermore, the design of the opening structure must be clever and well-thought through to secure the motion path of irregular glass.

Museum of Ancient Books and Records

As a branch of National Library of China, Museum of Ancient Books and Records is a state-level museum that displays classic works of Chinese literature, Chinese classics and disseminates Chinese culture. Its exhibits have a time span from oracle bones from 3000 years ago to modern & contemporary masters manuscripts, including heritage books from Dunhuang, rare ancient books, metal and stone rubbings, maps, Yangshi Lei Archives, ancient books in minority languages, masters manuscripts and rare books in western languages.
All display cases used in the Hall of Brief History, Hall of Yangshi Lei Archives, Hall of Metals & Stones and Hall of Masters Manuscripts were done by us.
The wall cases in one hall are connected to a MXI-ONE humidity-constant machine, while freestanding cases are equipped with a PMCG water-free humidity-constant machine. Furthermore, to minimize possible damage to paper exhibits caused by the lighting, in table -top cases we use a ROBLON fiber optic system from Denmark on which a series of adjustable torches on the lighting bar creates a perfect balance between performing its function and creating attractive lighting.
This project requires extremely strict AQ inside display cases. We can confidently say that our consistent standard on the choice of materials and technological level will meet the challenging requirements of this project.
